so i ned to rma my mobo, so im using a second mobo/cpu combo for a place holder, and now it says i need to buy a windows key ?, either way not too worried as this is temporary but if they send me a new mobo for the rma will i need to buy another windows key ? if so wtf microsoft its the same dam machine ffs

No, you can use the same key. You may need to use phone activation however to get it working.

You can use it without activation for 30 days. But new mobo from RMA would also be counted as new activation. If you have retail key, no problems. OEMs can get tricky.

Win7 OEM is still reusable, I'm not so sure about Win8+. Seen some guides here on how to get those working.

Your Hardware GUID has changed too much (there are hundreds of devices on the motherboard). MS requires you re-arm your activation. You can use the same code, but each code can only be used x amount of times (unless it is a KMS key, then you get unlimited, as it activates against your volume licensing account), it should go through fine, but worst case is to give MS a call, just choose other options -> phone activation when the internet activation fails (make sure you explain to them that 1: same computer, 2: you will have to re-activate when the repaired mobo returns - most of the time they give you all activation back if you do this).

ok, I won't be activating my temp mobo since that one just died, so I'm back on my laptop until my mobo gets back from rma, then I'll have to see what happens from there
