Intended use
I am going to use this build for gaming - skyrim, csgo(casually), etc. (and some more high end titles like Shadow of Mordor & GTA once I buy them) - and general internet browsing/work.

Budget
Preferably under £1000

Country
UK!

My potential build;
(from PCPartPicker)

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor (£169.98 @ Amazon UK)

Motherboard: ?
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (£36.40 @ Dabs)
Storage: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (£35.98 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (£50.34 @ Aria PC)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 970 4GB Twin Frozr V Video Card (£264.99 @ Amazon UK)
Case: Fractal Design Define R5 w/Window (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case (£82.30 @ Ebuyer)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 OEM (64-bit) (£74.95 @ CCL Computers)
Case Fan: Fractal Design GP14-WT 68.4 CFM 140mm Fan (£9.67 @ CCL Computers)
Total: £838.73

The case fan is just for a bit more cooling - and for positive pressure. I got it since it matches the ones already in the define r5.

Questions & other info
For my intended uses what do you think would be the best motherboard I could get for around £100?

Also, what monitor would you think would be best with the gtx970 and for the games I play? I can't decide between tn/ips, 144Hz/60Hz, 1080p/1440p - even after looking at some IRL! I would quite like once with a low response time - maybe under 8ms.

Just FYI I'm waiting until I decide on a mobo before I buy a PSU.

Thanks so much for any help I get! smile.gif

never get a v300 SSD EVER!

Yah, the V300 series is junk

If you want better performance in games get the r9 390 instead of the 970

For a PSU i would go with a EVGA G2 or Gs

Seems like a great motherboard to me (I prefer the asrock z97 fatality though)

Ok, I'll change that ssd to a Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250Gb (it's only £10 cheaper that the 120Gb). Thanks for pointing that out, I had no idea it was so bad!

I think I might stay with the 970 since they're the same price for me and the 970 has better cooling - although I'm not set in stone on that decision.

I'll have a look at those PSU's too.

That motherboard was just a place holder for the price I was looking at - although I will have a look at now, and the asrock z97 fatality.

Thanks so much for the help!

First of all thanks for the help.

Do I really need a CPU cooler if I'm not overclocking right away. I was planning to overclock in a few years when my CPU got old.

I see that is faster memory, thanks for recommending it.

I might stick with the 970 since I'm trying to include a monitor and other peripherals in my budget.

Finally, is that more expensive case really worth it? I've heard great things about the r5...

You don't need a CPU cooler right away, but I would recommend just overclocking right away to make the most out of your CPU.

For the case, if you are buying extra fans, I would go with the MasterCase since it comes with 5.

Also its alot better at higher resolution due to haveing double the VRAM

After looking at this I think I may go for the gtx 970 - even though I'm disagreeing with his conclusion xD!

My reasoning is as follows. The FPS difference between them is negligible, but the 390 outputs more heat and consumes more power - needing better cooling and a better PSU. Gaming at 1080p is not going to use that 8Gb of V-RAM either. The nvidia drivers also look better to me. Finally, they are at the same price now so the difference in price he was talking about is not relevant any more.

Ok, I'll maybe look at overclocking - but holding out still haves sense to me until I get more $$$ for cooling, and also so as to not void the warranty until I have to.

After looking at some reviews I'll probably stick with the r5 for the silence, price and it looks smexy!  :D

I know it looks like I've kind of ignored some of your advice - sorry about that! I have taken it into consideration, and thanks so much for giving it, but - y'know - you've got to stand on your own two feet.

Overclocking doesn't void your warranty. Even if you destroy your CPU because you overclocked you can still use your warranty.
