I was curious if there was a recommended pre-built NAS. What I want to do with it is read from it with kodi (xbmc) device I have around the house. It would need to run a mysql server to sync the kodi devices. It would also be great if i could run vuze on it also but I could still do that on my main pc. I wasn't sure what software capabilities were and i might be limited myself to a DIY build with the mysql server. thanks.

It's way cheaper to setup your own nas.

For example, for 4tb storage (according to your requirements) it would cost you about $500-600, but pre-built will be about $1-1.2k, because of (sometimes) overkill hardware for your needs and configured software.

i'm gonna suggest you just get a low end motherboard (soldered on processor?) or dumpster dive an old system that has enough sata ports.

then just drop in drives and set it up how you want.

building it yourself will cost more time now, but you will learn things, you know what hardware its running (and that it has no hidden agenda, to bring in some foil) and when it ends up breaking, you know the hardware, so its very easy easy to diagnose the issue.

i've spent that much time around the system thats now my home server that i can hear what its doing, or whats wrong with it.

Time is the problem, I just bought a house and many other projects to be working on, I was hoping I could just spend a couple hours and be done with it. Currently I'm just using my main computer as the "NAS" but if people are watching stuff I can't reset my computer or switch to windows to try out a game ect. Also when I type in pacman -Syyu who knows if samba will actually be working when it's done updating lol, sometimes there some tweaks that need to be made after.

Guess ill do some more research at a later date. thanks

Hey there Ohhwataloser :) welcome to the community!

I can suggest that you check out what WD can offer with its NAS devices, the EX series to be more specific. Here's a link to all NAS devices: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=lxzRsv
Depending on what specific features and number of bays, WD My Cloud EX2 and WD My Cloud EX4 can both do a great job. :) Feel free to ask if you have any specific questions.

If this helped you, like and choose it as best answer - you might help someone else with the same issue. ^_^
