New Video Card

Tomthedrum

Hi guys

I am putting together a new rig and I am thinking about buying a 970 with 4gb vram or a 980 with 6gb vram. Is the 980 worth the extra 150$?

Not at all, and unless you need nvidia specific features the R9 390 is a better buy :) (and this is coming from a guy with a nvidia card)

The 390 would outperform the 970, and they cost the same. So the 390 would be a total bang for the buck.

Well they're not wrong about thermal performance. AMD is really winning when it comes to designing toasters.

Literally every single person on this thread told you to get a 390, but if you want to be biased go ahead

@App4that - ask him about his temps - he barely goes beyond 65*C with his Nitro 390 - it's cooler than ANY 970 on the market.

Yep, Overclocked my Nitro 390 maybe hits 62c playing Fallout 4. 390s are big cards and if you have a case fan under them on the bottom of your case acting as an intake the 390 will love it. Makes a 10c difference in my temps.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

I find it somewhat hilarious nobody asked you what resolution or settings you use, or you know any information relevant to making an informed decision.

You asked about a 970 or 980 and immediately the 390 comments tidal wave.

The 980 is in a completely different performance (and price) bracket to the 390. If you play at 1440P or greater, it is the better option.

You can buy them from EVGA B stock for very reasonable prices and at that range, it's the card to get. Here's a example 980 FTW ACX 2.0 for $379.99, in stock at the time I post: http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=04G-P4-2986-RX

Thx m8:)

Yes I plan to play on 4k so I think i'll need a 980. Unfortunately this evga card is like 550 $ where I live:/.So I think I will go with the Galax GTX980 HOF for 50 $ more (mainly bc the card is white:D)

single 980 is NOT enough for 4K - you need 390X CF at the very least

If you go 4k, pickup a Fury x instead of whatever setup (single 980ti, 2-SLI 970/980)

As far as I know some ytber did some videos in which they play gtav on ultra settings in 4k with about 40fps (https://youtu.be/-UhG3ln27BQo) :)

Highly unlikely - Titan X has trouble maxing GTA V @ 4K and getting 45 fps

at 4K the Fury (non-X) is 30% faster than a 980 - you really want to consider it

I plan on overclocking the card and I read a benchmark in which the hof980 was quite close to the titan x :)

It doesnt have to be 4k(since I dont own a 4k compatible monitor yet ) uhd would be sufficient :D

We'll if you wanted the brand features, go stick with it if you're not crazy about performance. It's your money anyway.

UHD = 4k :P

Not possible - Titan X is MUCH more powerful than a 980. No amount of OCing will bring you even close

Yes Shadow play is a must for me since I want to capture csgo matches without a huge performance decrease:)

Well... 2k is enough since I dont want to spend 3000$ on a pc:D But how can this guy get 40fps on 4k ?

easy - it's not maxed. He left half the settings near-max or on medium. And even then it's a sketch and has a lot of stuttering (at least I noticed it)

1440p is 2.5K
