Hi all

So I just put together a computer, my third, and when I press the power button, it doesn't post, just runs the fans for a bit, turns of, and does it all over again. Help? Everything seems to be in order....

Thanks

Update - took everything apart, and put it back together - works fine now, no idea what was wrong

Without additional information, we can't help you. There are many potential issues that could cause that to happen. Check to see if everything has been inserted correctly. Make sure the RAM has been pushed in all the way, make sure the CPU isn't flipped around or something, etc. Can you post a spec sheet? When you turn the computer on, what post codes do you see (if any)? Post codes usually either display on an LED display on the motherboard itself, or in the corner of your computer's monitor. Refer to your motherboard's manual to see what the post codes mean.

you need to try process of elimintation

make sure all connections are tight

remove your gpu if you have dedicated graphics on your cpu and try posting, try your gpu in other pci slots

try 1 stick of ram and try it in different slots

try a different psu if you can

try reseating the cpu

if it still doesnt post with trying all of those and youre sure you have enough power for your rig and all compatible parts then i would rma your board

CPU: i5 6600k @ 4.6 ghz  Motherboard: Asus z170-a  Cooling: Corsair h80i GT GPU: EVGA GTX 970  Ram: G.Skill 2x8 gb ddr4 2400  PSU: EVGA G2 Supernova 550w  Case: Corsair 200r Storage: 250GB 850 EVO + 2x wd 1 tb drives

Verify all connections, and if you don't see anything wrong, remove all non-essential items, including boot device and keyboard and mouse.  Make sure your memory is in the correct minimal slot(s) - some mobos have restrictions.

If it boots, add items in 1 at a time to see if any of them are causing problems.

If it doesn't boot, double check the wiring and if it looks ok, then you've at least narrowed it down to the PSU, memory, or hopefully not the CPU or mobo ><.

At this point, as zzenigmaxzz said, swap parts out to find out which one is not working correctly.

Good Luck!

No post codes, no display in MB, specs are (sorry for bad formatting, but I'm on a phone) a gigabyte H170M-D3H, a core i5 6600, Asus strix gtx 960 4GB, and a corsair CX600m

Nice specs! =P

Make sure that your power supply is hooked up correctly. If it is and you still can't boot, try contacting the retailer for a replacement motherboard. Also make sure that there's no loose piece of metal touching your motherboard, something like that could short it out.

Haha, thanks. I went over everything, and made sure nothing could be shorting it out. I think i'll just take it over to the local computer store and see what they say, as they'd have the gear to properly test individual parts.
