So, following the LTT Holiday Buyer's Guide, and on @don_svetlio's advice, it would seem like that small solid-state cache in SSHDs makes quite the difference. I don't feel feel the need to swap out my Seagate for an SSHD entirely, so would it be possible to add an SSD (additional to the one I already have) to improve the performance of the HDD? I have a spare 40GB Intel SSD lying around.

And if it is possible, how would I go about configuring this?

Thanks for the help.

Intel Rapid Storage Technology has that function. Since you have an Intel setup, you probably have it already installed. :D http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/architecture-and-technology/smart-response-technology.html

It would seem this only works on a mechanical hard drive with the OS installed on it. Seeing as I already have my OS on an SSD, the 'Accelerate' option on Intel RST is not available.

Shame, I'd have liked to speed up my HDD. :c

Yeah. That's right. If you don't feel like reinstalling, you can clone the SSD onto the HDD, empty the SSD and go from there.

It works in a different way Cap, the SSHD mainframe or the OS (in my case - WD <3) decides what needs to be cached and what not - you need a custom PCB or a lot of modding and even then I doubt it will work as well as a consumer SSHD - if you have an SSD, though, an SSHD is not worth - it's a good compromise between the two but an SSD is worlds faster :)

Yeah, I'm sticking to my dedicated boot SSD. It'll be way faster than using it as a cache for the HDD.

Oh well, my friend has his OS on an HDD, I'll just donate my old SSD to him.  :D

Not a bad idea. To put it in perspective

My boot time with the WD Red 5400RPM 64MB cache drive = about 20-25 seconds

My boot time with the WD Black SSHD 5400RPM 8GB cache = 12-17 seconds

SSD boot times = 2-5 seconds

I bought my 40GB SSD in error, thinking that it would be enough to hold an OS. The following Windows updates proved me very wrong. :')

Which is why I think it's mad when people buy 1TB SSDs purely for their games, it's stupidly expensive.
