4P folding rig

Go to solution Solved by Extingquish,

The BigADV WUs were discontinued on January 31st this year, I don't think there's any work units that can make use of the 48 threads and give points like they used to

Currently the way to go for points is GPU rigs

I'm concidering buying 4 12 core AMD Opteron 6172s to make a 4P Folding rig but I need a motherboard that is relaible but not to expensive

I was planning for to build a cheap GPU folding rig but I changed my mind and I really like the idea of me have a 4p system I have seen the CPUs go for 60 shipped a piece

I feel like GPUs will still give better performance per dollar though... Also, aren't there 16 core opterons?

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

There are but those are rare on ebay and go for twice what the 12 core go for, This is not only preformance per dollar but also just a discovery project

As far as i am aware there is no such thing as a cheap 4p motherboard :P You

could try to look for some used Tyan or supermicrco boards... maybe you can

get very lucky and find a decent deal, but i would be more skeptical to buying a

used motherboard than a used cpu.

Not particularly cheap: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-SuperMicro-H8QGL-IF-Motherboard-FULL-MFR-WARRANTY-/220980427903?hash=item337375bc7f:g:kRYAAMXQVT9SztRC

Used processors like the 6172 are pretty cheap nowadays since they are like 5-6

years old, but still cost mucho dollars if you want to get them new from a distributor.

As mentioned above though, be aware that the bigadv project has been closed.

They are still shuffling out bigadv wu's for a undisclosed amount of time, but they

follow the traditional point scheme, no bigadv bonus.

You can get quad socket proprietary motherboards on ebay for around $90~ (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-Dell-PowerEdge-C6145-Server-Quad-Socket-G34-AMD-System-Motherboard-40N24-/391052116121?hash=item5b0c85c099:g:GiUAAOSweW5U2lit) but they use non standard connectors for power and such. Also, stuff like a 12 core opteron are really cheap nowadays on ebay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AMD-Opteron-6172-12-Core-OS6172WKTC-EGO-2-10GHz-12M-80W-Processor-CPU-G34-/151576766787?hash=item234aade943:g:wHkAAOSwv0tVb-Q0)
