Help picking a new gaming CPU

Hello everybody

 

I am looking for some help picking up a new cpu for gaming. I have been using an intel Core2 Quad Q6600 clocked @2.4 ghz for about 6 years now (I know, but it has actually served me quite well in games). I really have no preference to amd or intel I just want the best gaming CPU I can get for under $270 (Canadian$). Currently running my setup with a 750 ti but will be upgrading that as well later down the line. Anways, I just want some advice on what I should go for. Currently for the price I am highly considering the i5 6500. Around 265$ and it looks pretty good in the benchmarks I have been looking at. But I am looking for any help whatsoever on what your opinions are. Can I get a better CPU for the price?

I have never overclocked before but I am not opposed to trying it if anyone recommends an unlocked proccessor. And for my unusual circumstance I am only interested in the CPU. I understand that different proccessors can have cheaper motherboards and I may have to get new ddr4 ram to match and whatnot, but let's just pretend my situation makes sense. So for all intents and purposes I only want the best performing CPU for gaming given my price. I am also looking for a 2nd place and 3rd place to consider just incase I see any good sales.

A FX or i5 is good but anything above is even better such as the i7!

 

Since you clearly seem to want Skylake I guess a H170 board and a i5-6500 will be a great combo but I think you need some DDR4-2666 RAM also!

You could also consider the i5-4460, should be cheaper and is able to use cheaper components like a B85 board and DDR3.

One more question, where does the i5 4460 rank compared to the i5 6500?

A little beneath due to Skylake's improved IPC compared to Haswell but it's not so much of a difference in games (2-7FPS less at the most)

In many new games the FX line does better than many i5s and some older i7s such as in Fallout 4! But if you wanna play games from 2012 and 2013 I think you should go for Intel also AMD is gonna release a new in late 2016 so wait or upgrade to lake now!

Actually, what it means is that Intel monopolized the whole market by not letting anyone use the x86 instruction set. AMD can use it but they have to pay >_>

I5 4690k, reasonably good. Just had my new i5 4690k pc built, most games using 80% usage. It would be good to start getting an i7, it would be helpful for future games.
