Hey everybody! I'm really considering setting up an external gpu with my mid 2012 MacBook Pro. Now, before you start hating on me for even wanting to game on a Mac, let me say that I'm merely a college student who only has a Mac and wants to do some gaming. I don't really mind having to scale down the graphics, even if it means having to game at 720p 30fps (I don't wanna game on anything less than that). So, if you guys can recommend anything to me around the $400 mark, including anything extra I may have to buy, that would be great. Note: It would be the first time I do something like this (noob). Thanks for your time!

You'll need a thunderbolt based PCIe PCB to connect the GPU like firearm's akinito thunderbolt 2, a PSU 450-500W for best price/performance and a desktop GPU, I recommend a GTX 950 or higher

One day I will have my GTX 970. One day. PC specs are at my profile.

Not sure how to check what part works with what? Check out my compatibility guide!

Thanks a lot. I was considering the GTX960. Do you think I should get 2gb or 4gb of vram?

You could try installing Windows 10 on your Mac using Apple's Bootcamp. You will get around 2x fps in games when using Windows on a Mac than using OSX on a Mac. And it's cheaper than going the eGpuu route, you only need to buy a Windows 10 key which can easily be bought for $20 on Kinguin.

You will get better performance with an eGpu setup, but if you combine the two options (eGpu and Win10) , performance should be a lot better than using an eGpu on the OSX operating system.

 Good luck!
