Best CPU for a NAS?

Go to solution Solved by Bgordy2013,

wow that's a steal! Like the power draw it uses is negligible at best O.o . So you think its fast enough to run programs such as torrents? I was thinking of getting a small cheap ssd boot drive and using the 2 2tb as the storage for movies or files that i don't need all the time. Do you know any good tutorials about this? I think I might make the purchase now, I didn't think it would be this cheap

Yeah, I use transmission on it (a built in FreeNas plugin). There are plenty of tutorials out there on how to build it. You don't need an SSD with FreeNas because it will boot off a USB and that is how it is intended to be used. The power draw was one of the reasons that I got it as the system will be on 24/7. What is your knowledge level, FreeNas isn't super easy to use but with some learning it can be a very powerful software.

I am curious for an AMD or Intel Build

Intel. Cause of bad experiences with AMD CPUs and that alone.

Well, with an i7, GTX 1080, Full tower and flashy lights, it can obviously only be for one thing:

Solitaire.

Remember what linus tells us! We dont shop by brand!

were better than that ._.

Im not shopping by brand, im shopping by reliability! And AMD has NOT proven reliable to me.

You sir! Make Linus cry...

Oh please, come on. I have tried 3 different AMD CPUs with no luck. 3 different builds for 3 different people (one being my own). I have done 3 builds with Intel (see my sig for my current build) and havent had ONE issue. So if searching by reliability is not allowed then why not purchase a sweet CX power supply for you titan X..

Say what you want, i like a reliable system.

Sounds like this is not a AMD problem but a you problem.

I disagree. If i can build Intel systems no problem, then it is not me. I take care of all my parts and have always treated builds as if they were my own. I used an AMD CPU for my build for 3 years and hated it. Always wanted to switch to Intel and when i got my 6700k, its been fantastic. AMD worked ok but was NOT as reliable as the Intel.

generally, a low power part is the way to go.

if its only file storage, and its not needed for any processing to happen on the files, get whatever low wattage part you can find that can run a gigabit nic.

Dude... your saying out of the hundreds of processors out there, you have tried 6, and decided to judge the reliability of two entire companies just by a sample of 3 each? I dont even know what to say to that honestly...

Don't do drugs. Do hugs!

Im saying if it were me. Im not saying not to get one, My opinion is if i have had 3 terrible CPUs from AMD (and i work on PCs as my job and side job so i see more than just my personal experience) and had terrible luck with ALL of them and got 3 CPUs from intel and had GREAT success and longevity from them, im gonna go with Intel.

I have even told people to get r9 380s and 390s so i am not ANTI AMD, i prefer intel. Again, these are my opinions from my experiences. If i go to taco bell and get the shits 3 of 3 times and go to mcdonalds and dont get the shits 3 of 3 times, im not gonna go to taco bell...

Well actually you did kinda say not to get one in your first post. But I guess if you work on PC's atleast your sample size is bigger than 6...

I was voicing my opinion to get a good intel processor, which i paired with saying that i have had bad experiences with AMD. So that<--

Yes its bigger than 6, i was only using 6 as a reference. Im not saying they are bad and no one should ever buy them. Ive bought them apparently LOL. I am voicing an opinion with select facts that i have in my personal experience with them.

I just put this in my low budget NAS. Added 8GB ECC and 2x2TB HDDs and I have a nice little file server/torrent box. That CPU runs Transmission + Plex + FreeNas for me so you get a lot of bang for your buck out of it.

wow that's a steal!
