Ethernet cable help

My motherboard the Asus MAXIMUS VIII HERO ATX LGA1151 Motherboard has onboard ethernet at 1 x 10/100/1000 Mbps - what does that  mean?

 

Also I'm planning on running a cable from my router to the PC any tips or suggestions on what type of ethernet cable I should end up with?

It means that the ethernet on the motherboard is capable of transferring data at a theoretical maximum rate of 1000Mb/s.

 

Go for Cat5e for your cable, unless your router is really far away from your computer (more than 100m I think is the limit for Cat5e's gigabit transfer speeds).

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

Its max speed is 1000mbps (1gbps)

If you were to plug in a cable that couldn't run at 1000mbps it would run at 100mbps, and so on for the 10mbps.

Same thing with 10gbps (10,000mbps) -> would run at 1000mbps
