Transferring OS?

So this is kinda embarrassing to ask, but I'm looking to do a brand new build, but I need an operating system (Windows 10) to put on my new SSD. I really don't want to shell out another $100 though, is there a way I can transfer my Win10 subscription on my crappy pre-build pc to my SSD for my new rig? Thanks.

 

(also is there any compatibility issues going along with this? I connected the hard drive of my crummy pre-build to my gaming desktop, but the performance was absolutely terrible in games. Like 1-2 frames. Was this due to no supported drivers because the pre-built had integrated graphics, or something else?)

I've asked this before, The best way to get around it would be to buy a windows 7 key for about $20 and do the free upgrade to windows 10

When I upgraded to a SSD, I cloned the old hard drive onto the new SSD. Maybe you could do something like that? I can't remember the name of the software I used to do it. If you want me to look it up, quote me and ill reply later tonight when I get home. 

 

EDIT: this was windows 7. I'm don't think this would make a difference, but Im not sure.

Are these safe though? I've never gone down this route before. Also how exactly does that work? Do you have to download the file on a flashdrive or do you get sent a disk/key in the mail?

If you use Paypal or use a site that you'll get your money back it wont be a problem... Cloning doesn't work 100 percent, that's why I'm very skeptical about it. But once you have a key just download from https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows7 on to usb drive.

 

Edit: you should get the key as soon as you buy, not fully sure if everywhere will do it like that so best to check.

The software I used was http://clonezilla.org/. It worked great for me. I've been using a cloned hard drive for about a year now and have had no issues. Just keep in mind that you cannot use your old hard drive because your motherboard will freak out if it sees what looks like two of the same hard drive.

Since the last update you can activate Windows 10 with Win7/8 keys without having to actually install them first then upgrade. So your cheapest solutions would be to get some cheap Win7 key and use that. Otherwise no, if you switch motherboards your WIn10 will be deactivated.
