psu setup properly Help?

Go to solution Solved by quan289,

ace A-700BR

some brand i've never heard of and probably gonna return for something like what you mentioned/what you mentioned

but are you sure 430w is enough? right now i have a 700w psu

A 400w would be plenty. The problem here isn't about wattage. It's about quality. Can a particular unit deliver it's rated wattage safely without going out of ATX specification? Well, yours on a modern day system where the majority of the power draw is comes from the +12v cannot. There's two +12v rail on that Ace PSU, where they are both rated at 20A. Combined that's 40A or 480w on the +12v. Here's another thing. The rails are not additive either and is typically is rated lower. That's why I say it's not even a 500w power supply.

Even knowing that the two +12v rail is rated at 20A each, I can't accurately guess the actual rating of the +12v either. Since Ace decided to rate this unit as a 700w and keep the actual combined rating of the +12v rail hidden (which can imply that they have something to hide), I can assume that this unit is complete and utter trash.

Can it power a 7850 and a i5? Probably, yes. Because your system have a very modest power draw that the only time you might hit over 200w is during Synthetic loads of Furmark and Prime95, which is not an representation of real world power draw which will be under 200w DC. Regardless of whether or not it is able to power it or not, I would recommend getting a proper unit for your system. If you are looking for a cheap and inexpensive power supply, the CX430 Bronze is a decent budget oriented power supply.

Edit: the XFX Core Edition 450w cost a little more than the CX430v3 but better build. I would recommend that: http://www.amazon.co.uk/XFX-Edition-Bronze-Wired-Supply/dp/B005FPT38U/

I doubt this is in the right section but i don't know which one to put it in anyway

Is this all the power cables i have to plug in and do i have to plug in anything Else?

(no ghrafics card yet)

No, you need to plug in the little 4 pin as well. You should be able to attach the 2 together and plug them in as one.

The red one is not it. That's the PCIe connector for your graphic card, which the black and yellow cable are reverse. The black 4-pin one should be it. Sandybridge/Haswell has a rather modest power draw, so you should be fine with just the 4-pin CPU connector unless you heavily overclocking that system.

However, what PSU you got anyways? Model?

Yeah that's what I thought too, I wasn't sure about the colors since I've always used corsair PSUs that always have black cables but are clearly market.

The way you connected it now is correct.

I had a feeling you got such a power supply. It's poorly choice unit on your part, which can be consider a fire hazard... If you look at the +12v rail of that unit, it's not even a 500w unit by today's standard and I can only guess how it would perform. It should boot up your system now just to see if it power up, but I would highly recommend you getting a proper unit for your system.

What is your budget and what are you planning on powering? Also, can you provide us any links as to where you are able to buy from?

Unfortunately, I have to go now. I've been awake throughout the night here and can't stay awake much longer, so yeah... I'll try to get back to you later on today, if I get the chance.

Edit: that power cord you have is fine.

thanks alot for your help its greatly appreciated, and yes i was worried about the psu because I've never heard of it. I think i will probably return it if there is a chance its of low quality and the site i got all my parts from is amazon.co.uk

You're welcome. Yeah, usually power supplies that are this cheap, especially at that output level, it more than likely a poor unit. I would hope that it should at least be capable of powering a system with just a processor and SSD to see if it works though, but outside of that, I would not used it in my system.

We need to know what is it that you are powering. Do you have an i5-3570k? i3-2100? Also what graphic card you are going to be powering? Are you powering more than one in SLI/CFX? Basically your full system specs is needed to give you a proper PSU recommendation.

i5 3570k (i'm hoping to overclock in future thats why i got the k version)

amd hd 7850 sapphire oc edition

wd black edition hard drive

8 gig ram

i had thought this psu would be enough but you probably know alot more on the subject so thanks for warning me

What was the psu that you had?

Something like a cx430 would have been perfect for your build.

If you ever need help with a build, read the following before posting: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/3061-build-plan-thread-recommendations-please-read-before-posting/
