Hey Guys,

I posted a few weeks ago about poor wifi in my house and got a Linksys wifi-extender. It works good enough for 3.0 mb/s downloading from steam. But we just got a 4k smart tv and the wifi is just not cutting it.

We are in the basement with my desktop and the Smart TV, and the router is on the second floor. The extender is on the 1st floor. Running cat5 cables is not possible as it is my parents house and they don't like cables on the walls and ceiling.

Can I run a second modem/router in the basement straight from the cable signal and generate enough wifi from the basement? Should we rent another one from Comcast for $5 a month, or purchase one outright?

Thoughts on how to improve?

Thanks

Two things for you.

Troll comment: Download the internet on a USB and take it to your PC. When you run out go get more.

Real comment: Honestly it would be better if you could run a cable. Im just being frank with you here. You could have an electrician run a line through you house for less than having comcast come out and install another line for you. You could also try a power line adapter but again thats another iffy subject at distance. I would talk to your parents about getting a line fished so its not visible if its possible

You can run more than one modem on the same line BUT be careful, If your ISP does not allow this then don't do it. Otherwise it wont hurt anything just use a pass through or a line spliter.

Never rent your modem always buy it, it will cost less .... a lot less.

*edit

you can also use a power line adapter.

*2nd edit

Do what @tbroadwater2010 suggests.  Using one modem and running your network is the best idea of course and having the electrician run your lines will work better than contacting the cable copamy.

What was referring to would work in theory but it is not a common thing to do. And ISP's can get mad at you if they think your subverting them or whatnot. With having Comcast as your ISP they would probably freak out on you and claim your stealing internet use. (comcast = douchebags)

I know running lines would be the best option, but thats just not possible. We have a finished basement and that would require cutting into sheetrock and then fixing said sheetrock. It's just not in the cards that way.

We do have Satan Comcast as our cable provider, so we will ask them about another modem. We also need a TV box, so maybe they have combo units. I looked into the power line extenders and got mostly negative reviews from people here.

As for paying for renting the equipment vs buying, it's not my money, and not something I want to get into with my parents.

Just so you know (I understand it is your parents house) wires can be ran without cutting up the walls. Electricians use wire snakes to run lines all the time.

Linus has done a review of power line extenders you may want to watch it but it seems to me it is the best bet for you. They are not the greatest but they do work pretty decent. Honestly I would use to send a signal to my tv but I wouldn't use it for my pc.

You can't have more than one modem in a house.

Why do you have the router on the second floor? Usually, you should be able to plug the modem into any cable outlet in the house. Have you tried moving your modem and router to the first floor to centralize the signal in the home ?

Also, 3.0 Mb/s is pretty slow. what kind speeds do you get from the actual modem? If you're connection is low to begin with, no amount for shuffling will speed you up enough to stream and sort of viewable video above 480p.
