I want to put a ubiquiti  UniFi AC Lite AP (UAP-AC-LITE) in the middle of my house. Main reason is PoE(Power over Ethernet). Since it's not a WAP + Router combo unit, do I need to buy a seperate router?

I'm not quite sure if I need a router or not. My ISP only gave me a modem. If I do need a router, what's a good router to buy? Should I just buy another one of ubiquiti's products?

You need a router, it doesn't have DHCP server. Honesty if your only going to run one them your not benefiting all that greatly from the additional features that set these APs apart from consumer devices. Personally I'd just get a Netgear R7000 for your case.

Damn near any router would do, but yes you should get a midrange router (Router/ Switch / AP Combo actually, because real ROUTERS are huge, and expensive.) and I suppose you probably want to disable its built in AP. (This is all coming from my studying for my A+)

I must recommend this product

as it is what I am currently using in a VERY similar setup at my own home to yours.

~ Good Luck.

I have an apple airport extreme right now. As I posted in the OP, the main reason for switching to ubiquiti stuff is because of PoE, I want to be able to mount it on my cieling, because of how my house is structured, I have to place it in this awkward position, where a traditional combo unit wouldn't be able to stay(as well as 2 cables are uglier than 1 flat ethernet cable)

I was looking at this

Since it has a PoE switch built in, I wouldn't need to use additional converters.

I would say since you are disabling the AP on the router you buy and using the Ubiquiti for the AP

Gigabit ports would be the first step. Beyond that you would probably want to look at things

like Quailty of Service control and advanced features like that.

Plug in the patch cable into the airport extreme then into the PoE injector then run the full length cable to the AP and disable the Wifi on the router. Just make sure it's Cat 5e or better (braided core works better for PoE). Also I'd stay away from those flat cables, they claim to be Cat 6 but are Cat 5e at best.

Well the main question was whether or not I needed a router when using a WAP only unit. And if anyone had any recommendations for routers.

I'm not that much of a networker, I personally am a programmer so I can't really go into that much with this kind of stuff before not even knowing myself

sorry :\

That would be a perfect Router for your situation!

Oh really? Flat cat 6 are cat 5e at best? I'm interested now, why is this? Is it because of the shape or something?

Almost all are cheap quality, there are good ones but they're usually twice as expensive as standard Cat 6.

I was just going to link to that. I haven't used one myself and I believe this particular model requires a bit of setup, but it's probably your best option. It's one that I've considered getting myself even though I don't have much of a need for it.
