Hi guys, Im 17, I used to be a massive computer enthusiast and wanted to learn everything there was about computers, only issue is Ive been out of the game since around 2009-2010. I actually was searching for somewhere to learn about the latest tech for about two months before (believe it or not) a guy at my local best-buy told me about Linus.

Anyways, Im having an issue of I havent set up a wireless router in roughly about idk...10 years.

I just recently moved in with my mom and step-dad and they are in an older house with plaster walls and a bunch of other stuff and the wifi sucked. It wouldnt even go about 10 feet from the cable company router/modem combo. I added an older Netgear router and its helped out a little bit (granted I need to move it technically) so it finally reaches the end of the house...barely,

but Im having issues where the old wifi SSID still exists, and is running in my house, so Im essentially running two wifi's at once. Thankfully they arent on the same channel, and Im in a slightly inactive area, but it still causes issues. Especially since the new...(ish) router is on top of the modem/router (not my placement).

Is there a way to deactivate the old wifi, or do I just have to get them to get a cable modem which should help out with speeds as well?

Really depends what kind of control you have over the ISP router.  If you have admin access to the web config, you should be able to disable the WiFi pretty easily.

As far as I know I have no control, Im in Ohio and the ISP is TimeWarner so...I know they got upset when I took the cap off a couple years ago when I was younger.

Then there's really no way to turn off the WiFi if you can't configure the router :P  Just unscrew the antennas or something.
