Fallout 4 - FPS drop

Flanelman
Go to solution Solved by SkilledRebuilds,

Hmm it seems that wehn my fan is on full the game runs 60fps consistently (so thanks for bringing this to my attention guys :) ) but shouldn't them temps i listed above be fine?

Consistent 60fps tis nice,...as long as those fans are not too loud to pull it off.

Maybe THAT specific laptop bios/hardware has lower thresholds for temps than others.

Not much you can do besides run the fans faster.

Hi guys i was wondering if anyone knows why my fallout is having intense frame drops.

I can run the game 60 fps on ultra quite comfortably for about 5 mins, then all of a sudden it drops to 18-30 fps and won't go higher.

sometimes if i minimize and re open it goes back to 60 for another 5 mins.

it isn't the area im in because my frames will be 60 and even if i don't move they'll drop, and like i sadi if i minimize and re open it goes back to 60 for a little while.

I have the game ready driver too.

Any help would be appreciated :)

system:

i7 4720HQ
16gb ram
GTX 970M

thanks again!! :)

Is your graphics card throttling?

Heat wise? nah it's between 80-85

edit: i turned my fan onto full and my gpu dropped to 70-75 and i'll run it like that for a while see if theres any differences :)

Monitor CPU speeds while playing as well as GPU speeds.

Laptops are notorious for throttling after prolonged use when gaming IF its not a 'Gaming' grade laptop, cooling in these systems is usually JUST ok, never great under prolonged load.

Check CPU Speeds in real time while playing in a window, and see if its dropping CPU speeds to under 1.4Ghz (possibly 800Mhz) across all cores while playing.

The fact it starts OK, then gets ruined after minutes, then when you lose focus (dropping from full load) of the app then its fine,...would instantly tell me its a heat buildup/throttling issue.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

My laptop is gaming grade, i have IC Diamond and have copper heatsinks for extra cooling also. i can run BF4 at ultra 60+fps for hours runs the witcher really wellas well which is why i'm un sure of why this game is dropping so bad.

edit: surely my gpu being 80-85

and cpu being about 75 would not be heat throttling would it?

I'm getting consistent 30 FPS with VSync on, which is expected considering my specs.

I'll monitor my CPU/GPU loads tonight but I'm quite happy to be playing even at 30. No noticeable lag, at least for me.

Only "drops" I've seen were, err, during a loading screen, of all places. Dipped to 18-19 FPS then came right back to 30 a second after the dip
