So I'm nearly finished building my first PC, and I need an operating system (preferably windows 10). I have a laptop running windows 10 and can easily make an ISO file on a USB stick, but I was wondering if I could buy a windows 8/8.1 license and use that during install. Plus, would I just plug in and boot from the USB with the windows ISO on it, and would it recognise that it's a completely fresh install?

If you buy a Windows 8 license then you have to install that and take the free upgrade. Windows 7 licenses are the cheapest rn, so buy one of those and take the upgrade.

EDIT: If you boot from the USB and you get the windows installer then go ahead but if not Microsoft provides an application for it (and someone will link it, probably)

My rig: Intel Core i7-8700K OC 4.8 | NZXT Kraken X62 | ASUS Z370-F | 16 GB Trident Z RGB 3000 (2x8) | EVGA 1070 SC | EVGA SuperNova NEX650G1 | NZXT H700 | Samsung 250GB 850-EVO | 2x 2TB Seagate Barracuda HDDs

So would I be able to download a windows 7 ISO onto a USB, install it on the PC and then enter the product license when prompted?

Yes.

Here's how it's been recommended:

1) Install your Win7/Win8 OS.

2) Upgrade to Win10.

3) Copy your new Win10 product key/ID for later (Computer > Properties)

4) Perform a fresh Win10 installation, use the product key you pulled after the upgrade
