So.. Been trying to convince my cousin of getting into PC Gaming.

What can you people put together for $400 or less. One wild card, I have a PSU however, it only has a 4PIN CPU Connector and a 6 Pin GPU Connector. The PSU is nearly brand new, old, 400w PSU. No overclocking will be done, well not a heavy amount. Maybe some light

Parts I have

1) TB HDD and 200GB One

2) 8GB of DDR3 Ram

3) 400w PSU, 4PIN CPU, 6PIN GPU.

I may be able to snatch a case up at my local flea market. Some Cooler Master case for around $30 but just use like a NZXT 410 or similar case. Molex to 4/8PIN is a thing but would like to avoid :)

One 6 pin on the GPU, was the most powerful GPU I could find with a 6 pin.. Unless i'm being stupid.

$400 or less.. He is a console player. So as long as it can do medium settings 60FPS or high settings. That is fine.

I would go with:

i3 4170(Can't go newer Skylake because DDR4)

A nice LGA1150 motherboard of your choosing

R9 380. (Can use molex to PCI power connector if PSU is powerful enough)

Also, what brand is the PSU?

I wouldn't go with AMD CPU at this pricepoint as an i3 is much stronger than the quad core 860k or FX 4000 series.

i7 4790k | GTX 970 | 16GB

That's all you need to know. It's a beast.

Here's a basic build. No OS: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/gH9qvK

No monitor, Keyboard, Mouse, or OS (like I said)

Enjoy

Molex to 8  pin = Win.

As I love AMD GPUs, with this PSU I would like to stick to the 300s or nVidia to cut down on heat and power consumption.

Corsair? Lol the only "cheap" options from corsair are horrible. If he gets a new PSU it will be a cheap 400w XFX or SeaSonic

That specific 285 was engineered to have low power consumption and heat... because ITX compact version.

This will probably burn out the PSU within a year of heavy use... depends how good the PSU is.  With the HDD the system would be between 75%-90% PSU load under heavy usage.

Ahh, the PSU as I forgot,to mention is the 2nd choice. The guy at the Flea Market has a ton of Antec PSUs. Some are Basiq series which are made by Delta and a HCG. Have not beem there in a few weeks, may be gone.
