Need a laptop for University

Esg876

Couldent find a better forum to post this in, so please inform me if theirs a better place!  Anyway, my cousin is starting university and needs a laptop that can run 1080 videos, has between 6-8 hours battery, pref an SSD drive and has a great build quality (want it to last 5 years min, before suffering any major issues).  His targeted price is around $1000~ CAD, but can be increased by a few hundred if the laptop is that much better.  I also do prefer Asus simply due to the 1 year accidental damage warranty.

I was looking at the ASUS Zenbook UX32VD-DH71 but it's not really on sale and the SSD drive is really really small.  I was also looking at the Samsung Series 9 NP900X4D, but have no expierence with samsung offerings and not sure about their warranty and build quality.  Any help would be appreicated, thanks in advance!

There's a Sony VAIO Pro 13 offer on the Sony Online Store. Check it out, I ordered one, should arrive soon, and it's got a fair pricetag.

I starting collage in September, i was looking also but I would not buy one as of now and wait for more haswell laptops coming out. Also refreshes too, so i suggest waiting a bit but if the cpu is not a factor then by all means you can buy any top tier Asus product it should be fine. Linus loves the Aspire S7 it might be a good choice, it has goralla glass.

I have a UX31 zenbook for uni, Im doing an IT degree so i thought it would be useful. I was dead wrong. I barely use the thing, i only use it 1 day per week for coding subjects and at all other times i use my rig and i definitely should have saved a lot of money on my laptop and put that money into my rig. But when i do use it, its an awesome little light and quick ultrabook. No problems with it in any way

Sony Vaio Pro 13 with Haswell is great for university.  If you are willing to go mac, macbook air 13" is also a solid choice.  Samsung series 9 is overprice in my opinion.

Okay, A question for you guys. I'm torn between a Sony Vaio Duo 13 with i5-4200 and 4gb ram and a Dell XPS 12 with an i7-4500 and 8gb ram. The Sony one is actually a tiny bit more expensive than Dell even though it only has an i5 and half the ram. So, would you guys go for the Dell in this situation? Only thing is i'm admittedly a Sony fanboy, kinda, very mildly :)

Not that I have a good contribution to this thread but....

1080 videos is a lot! ( working around the fact you forgot to write 'p')

Anyway, I think that the Asus n76 line has the build quality you are looking for, good old aluminium badassery.

He has to get an SSD put in there though.
