Do I really need to overclock?

I'm currently deciding the cpu on my build and im not sure if I will overclock!! If im not overclocking im getting a 6500 or 6600 and if im overclocking im getting a 6600k. I will use my pc for performance intensive gaming and sometimes sony vegas editing(will edit gaming videos and will not add much effects). Also im planning to run photoshop on future. Also I am going to use my pc for 4~6 years.

Don't really need to, overclocking is just a good potential if you want to. If it doesn't justify the price, then don't get it.

overclocking wont help much for games (ocing your cpu atleast) but it will help with editing and rendering

I'd get the 6600k if you are planning to keep the machine or at least the CPU for such a long time. Overclocking makes a difference yes, just not a huge amount in gaming. But then again it totally depends on the game/application and how cpu intensive it is.

Nothing will make it futureproof, but it will make it MORE futureproof than if you get a CPU which can't overclock.

If u're not familiar with overclocking, get non-k cpu.

I'd suggest you to get a used old pc with overclockable cpu to practice.

Depends on what GPU you are getting, if you aren't getting a GPU for around 300 dollars don't bother.

maybe like 7 years ago but ocing is so simple now and so many fail safes in place that its almost impossible to fry a cpu

its not even stressful to do a quick and dirty oc, just google what other people generally get and start there

he's using it for rendering and photoshop, so it should help quite a bit

I'd argue otherwise. A highly OCed i7-2700K is still on par with a stock 4790K in gaming performance. A stock 2700 would likely fall behind.

If you're spending over $750 on a new system, an extra $60 for K sku + cooler (212 EVO) shouldn't break the bank. The only way you'll run into a huge price discrepancy would be going with a 6XXX and an H board (instead of Z).

 

IMO overclocking is always worth it, regardless of the application.

That is a more realistic estimate. 3 years is what I would consider an optimal refresh cycle.
