So as the title suggests, I am planning on upgrading my CPU because a buddy of mine wants to buy my current CPU/Motherboard.

My question is what would be the biggest performance jump from what I have now.

My budget for the CPU, Motherboard and new RAM (if needed) would be a max of around $800-$1000.

Current CPU is the I7-4790K on the Asus Maximus Hero VII with 16GB of DDR3 1600Mhz

CPU: i7-8700K I CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 GPU: ROG Strix 1080 Ti MoBo: ROG Strix Z370-E RAM:  G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2 x 16GB)   PSU: CORSAIR HXi Series HX1000i Case: Corsair Air 540 Display: 24" 1920X1080p 144Hz ASUS - 27" 2560X1440p 144Hz Dell OS: Windows 10 Home 64bit

If all you do is game, then there isn't any performance gain really, going to Skylake or X99 for that matter. So if you MUST change to something new, then yes the i7 6700k or the 5820k will do just fine. I went with skylake because it usually overclocks higher than X99 chips and has better IPC, and seeing as quad cores are all you need in games at the moment it was the wiser choice for me.
