Something like this would be your best option.  IR remotes would require line of sight, and wireless remotes that use radio frequencies could suffer from signal interference.

This is a timer remote that would plug into your camera's control port.

This is just one example model, do a bit of research online for "Timer remotes for Sony XXX camera" to make sure it is compatible.

PS: if you have any questions about doing time-lapse, you can ask me.  I'm sort of a time-lapse expert.

I don't see why not, as long as you can find a timer remote that cable can be plugged into.

I personally use Phottix Nikos and Promote Controls, which uses interchangeable cables making them compatible with multiple camera systems.

With a compatible app, you should be able to. I would recommend something like Trigger Trap App.  They also sell compatible cables for a variety of cameras.

I don't know, I believe the app is free, so check if it works with your cable.  OK I don't know what kind of apps Sony has on either the iOS or Android stores that are designed to be used with their cameras and have the time-lapse recording feature, but there might be some apps available.

Here's a time-lapse I did for my office sometime ago, over a period of 2 days.  I had to carefully mark the positioning of my camera and tripod because they couldn't be left out overnight. Later on I had to move it as the final stages of the assembly risked hitting the camera.

1 photo taken every 10 seconds, over a period totaling about 16 hours.  I have to check my files, but the shutter speed was around 1/60th - 1/100th of a second I believe.
