Evening guy's

I'm having a nightmare over clocking this 860k on my gigabyte MOBO.

Do I disable and cool and quiet and do I leave turbo core enabled in bios?

What is the best program to use as and overdrive doesn't seem to be going okay

Never should use software to overclock, as the overclock they provide is generally unstable.

CPU overclocking should be done in the BIOS, and the BIOS only.

Well i've gone into bios,

I've disabled turbo core and set core ratio to 40 so 4GHZ it shows up in bios as all 4 cores 4GHZ but overdrive and every other cpu program shows 2 cores running 4ghz and 2 stuck at 1.7ghz :S even when i launch Prime 95 with 1 worker per core 2 cores still stay at 1.7ghz...

BUT if I change bios back to default I.e turbo core back on and set to auto all 4 cores work correctly :/

THIS IS DRIVING ME NUTS :(

Got all 4 cores to run 4GHZ by upping the Vcore to 1.382 but when I run Prime95 they jump all over the place from 4ghz back to 1.7ghz then back up.....

I'm having the exact same issues. In the end, I gave up fussing over prime95 stress testing since the CPU worked fine for what I did (I never put the CPU through that much load on a daily basis).

My motherboard is the Gigabyte F2A68HM-HD2. I had the same issue as you, cores getting stuck @ 1.7GHz(the last 2) whenever AMD cool 'n' quiet was disabled. I don't seem to get it now, though.

I think your motherboard is like mine (weak) and probably has its VRMs overheating themselves to the point where they decide to throttle your CPU down to keep temps from going insanely high (to prevent death).

OVerdrive seems good at monitoring your temps (the rest seem very inaccurate). My CPU was throttling whenever thermal margins (basically how far your CPU is to overheating status) hit below 20C (which shouldn't cause throttling issues), which leads me to believe that it's the VRMs on the motherboard letting me down. After this, I gave up trying. :P

My 860K manages to stay "OK" for about 4-5mins of stress testing before "the throttle" begins. However, I had to undervolt my CPU because it seems the default voltage (1.3875 according to overdrive) is way too much for my motherboard - throttle begins very quickly if left at default voltage.

I have to use Overdrive to undervolt because my BIOS does not allow me to undervolt. :S

I know people do not recommend using software to modify your CPU but I have no choice in this case since BIOS only allows increasing volts.
