So I bought Windows 7 Pro off Software Geeks with the intention of immediately upgrading to Windows 10 Pro on my new PC (no optical drive, so has to be a done on a bootable USB)

This hasn't worked out well for me so far...

I opened the tool, and tried to use the ISO file I got from Software Geeks... straight away I got an error saying "The selected file is not a valid ISO file,"

I managed to get past this by essentially following this fix:

http://www.intowindows.com/fix-the-selected-file-is-not-a-valid-iso-file-error-in-windows-7-usbdvd-download-tool/

However, when I then use the new ISO file created by this fix to copy files to a USB memory stick (well over the 4GB minimum), I get ANOTHER error

The program quickly reaches 99%, then stops for a minute or so before saying "We were unable to copy your files. Please check your USB device and the selected ISO file and try again."

I followed the fix listed here:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_install/unable-to-copy-files-using-windows-7-usbdvd/bd21e76d-5174-4f76-8db5-36df105a12c5?auth=1

Unfortunately, this had no effect and the file copying still failed.

Any fixes or alternative solutions?

I've always had problems getting that Win7 USB Tool to work properly. I recommend using something like Universal USB Installer instead. It's used by most people for creating bootable USB Linux installers, but in the 'Select a Linux Distribution' dropdown, if you scroll down to the bottom there's an option for Windows ISOs. I've never had any issues installing Windows with it.
