Hi guys.

So I'm very much a beginner so don't expect I know too much and this is also why I'm asking you for help.

I recently bought the R9 380 4gb and it's great but I'm experiencing lower fps and more lag than I thought i would. A game like Battlefield 4 run with around 30 fps(and lower) on medium. Witcher on around 50(and lower) on high(with some adjustments). And I run gta V on around 30 fps on medium.

So what is going on? I think the trouble is with my CPU but I want to be sure. I would want to buy a new CPU but since my motherboard doesn't support newer CPU's I have to buy a new motherboard as well and that is kinda too expensive for me right now(I only have around 200-300$ to spend).

Since I'm on the hype train for Fallout 4 I would essentially want to have a temporary solution so I can (maybe? :S)run on ultra. So here are my questions:

  • Am I experiencing a bottleneck or could the problem be somewhere else? Could it be a virus and would it help to reinstall my system?
  • Do you have any other temporary solutions?
  • Would it help to overclock(and is it worth the try considering I probably have to buy a new cooler and learn how to overclock and actually do it in just a few days?)

Hope some of you guys have the answers others can't give me :)

SPECS:

Motherboard: ph7h55-m si asus

CPU: Intel Core I7 370 2.93 Ghz

GPU: MSI R9 380 4gb

RAM: 12GB

BUDGET: 200-300 dollars

Monitor your CPU use and GPU use at the same time while gaming and see what peaks at 100% while seeing what doesn't. I know for a fact that my GTX 660 Ti is only being used about 60% to 75% in my secondary rig while my Pentium is being thrown against the wall at 99.7%.

If it does turn out to be a bottleneck, you could buy a new CPU cooler and overclock your CPU, however I'd just go all-in and get a used i7 4770K/4790K or i5 4670K/4690K and a Z97 board for it. Normally, I'd recommend you go with a Skylake chip, but your budget won't easily allow for it. You should be able to get the CPU for around $250, but it won't leave a lot for a board.
