Advice on a setup

I'm looking to get two reference speakers for audio production and a sub. Any ideas for a good setup for under $500 would be awesome.

Can't really recommend a sub for audio production, especially if you're going to spend less than $500 on it. I'd get a Focusrite 2i2 and JBL LSR305 monitors.

Keep in mind that this isn't an accurate representation of what these speakers can do. The audio contains room acoustics, it is next to impossible to accurately represent the precision of a speaker by recording it and to top that, the audio got compressed for youtube. 

 

The KRKs are actually that bad, but the HS5 is designed to be used with a subwoofer. I've never heard the HS5s myself, so I have no idea if they're as nice as their big brothers (the HS8s; when used with a good sub, obviously)

I second this. The JBL LSR305 is pretty much the de-facto option for budgets like this, and the Focusrite 2i2 is a great little device. However, if you're planning to use Windows 10, I have heard that there may not be any driver support for it currently, so I would ask the wonderful folks over at sweetwater if they might know.

Doesn't he get most of his info from that Mayflower guy?

Though I'm not sure how I feel about that guy since he is running a company that "technically competes" with others like Mr. Speakers or Schiit.
