Very Loaded Server Question

Go to solution Solved by Cvdasfg,

What about gpus? And what's a super micro board and what should I look for in a xeon.

Mostly just a fun server project for my friends and I. At most, I'll need 3 terabytes.

What os will you be using? I just use the mobo graphics on my super microboard :P I can post a specs list of mine if youd like.

Supermicro boards are just nice server boards. They have a lot of features on them that only come with server boards.. for example remote login, virtual bios settings and stuff like that.

This is a good middle ground xeon ( very similar to a 4790k spec wise) http://www.microcenter.com/product/442357/Xeon_E3_1276V3_36GHz_LGA_1150_Boxed_Processor

This is the board I chose for myself that goes along with that xeon ^^ http://www.microcenter.com/product/446606/X10SLA-F_LGA_1150_Intel_ATX_Motherboard

ram that goes along with this ( ecc ram) http://www.microcenter.com/product/403678/Server_Memory_16GB_DDR3-1600_(PC3-12800)_CL11_ECC_Server_Module_Kit_(Two_8GB_Memory_Modules)

This is a big question, but I would be extremely grateful for anyone who could explain to me:

A: What things one would be looking for in a cpu, motherboard, ram, hdd/ssd, gpu, case, and psu for a server.

B: How much ram and storage is necessary (for a relatively small server)

C: If heavy cooling is required

Thank you so much! I'm looking into a server for some friends and I to play games and be 3LIT3 H@X0RZ on.

A: xeons, super micro boards, ecc ram, that sorta thing ;) find a case with tons of HDD slots and put as many drives as possible for safer raid ( if thats what you want)

B: Depends on what your doing.. usually 16gigs of ram is what i stick with as a minimum. As far as storage goes what do you need/plan to do?

C: Nope not really. Unless you plan on stressing this thing 24/7 they tend to run much cooler then gaming rigs ( for obvious reasons)

If you can find one, a better board would be the ASRock C226 WS - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157409&cm_re=asrock_c226-_-13-157-409-_-Product

Dual Intel NICs

More PCI-e slots.

Full ECC support.

10 SATA 6Gb ports instead of the 2 SATA 3Gb and 4 SATA 6Gb on the Supermicro board.

Full support for Linux and even Windows Server 2012 R2.

No motherboard graphics though. You'll need a Xeon ending in 5 or 6.

No IPMI either. Find a XEON that supports vPro instead, there are a few.

If it is nothing big, I would recommend parts that are low powered and fairly powerful. That is why I would say get an AMD Kabini 5350 quad core for £36. It is dirt cheap and runs at 25W. It also has integrated graphics (I know it wont be used) in case it needs a bit more possible power.
