Info about AMD mantle

Go to solution Solved by typographie,

It's neither "gone" nor "dead," per se. It's just deprecated and probably won't show up in any new games. Current games with Mantle support haven't lost it, and I guess it's possible a few upcoming games with promised Mantle support may still release with it.

Mantle aimed for goals similar to what DirectX 12 does: a lower-level API that relies less on the driver interface between game and silicon. In the games that support Mantle, enabling it has some performance benefits compared to DX11 on very specific systems: generally those with a high-end AMD GPU held back by a comparatively weak [usually but not required to be AMD] CPU. If you have a fast CPU, Mantle doesn't really make much difference. Mantle comes with it's own set of glitches and issues as well, so I'm not too sure I'd recommend anyone expect to use it regularly.

In terms of performance it can't really be compared to DX12 because we're very unlikely to ever see a game that supports both simultaneously. But DX12 is automatically a more practical and permanent solution because it's compatible with cards from both vendors.

Its dead.

AMD GPUs only. It's better than DX11 in terms of performance and features, not as good as DX12 (which is somewhat based off of Mantle API.)

Its dead.

You're late, it's dead

Wrong. It has simply transformed. It has become Vulkan, a new compute API. Basically a much improved OpenGL.

In terms of performance it can't really be compared to DX12 because we're very unlikely to ever see a game that supports both simultaneously. But DX12 is automatically a more practical and permanent solution because it's compatible with cards from both vendors.

Vulkan will be out in like a month and that is the evolution of mantle into an industry standard. I suggest waiting for that to get more info.

Performance is expected to be very similar to DX12. Don't expect much advantage their either way...
