Router Help

Go to solution Solved by Patrick3D,

Check with the University IT department, or whichever group/company is responsible for the network connection in your room and ask them if you are permitted to connect a router to your Ethernet jack. Some universities restrict Ethernet connections to a single MAC and require a client login to establish connection. If you connect your computer to the Ethernet jack do you have to register or agree to an acceptable use policy before being able to access websites?

If they permit routers you can get a small access point like a TP-Link TL-WR710N that just plugs into a power outlet and has an Ethernet port and built-in router.

I live in student housing and the Wifi is really really bad. However, my Ethernet is really good and I do not access to the router. However, I have an Ethernet wall socket. So if I connect an Ethernet Cable to a router can I use the wifi from the router?

Update: I also don't have access to the router settings

Wouldn't he need access to the base router's settings and setup for that?

Not what I'm aware of. Like its should be like creating a NAS.

Interesting.

Like its like turnign the Ethernet signal into a wireless signal if I'm right. Haven't done it myself but I think its how it should work.

Then again he still needs permission to use one from the IT department at his school.

He said he had so he could plug in a ethernet cable in the wall didn't he?
