Im going for a intel upgrade to the i7 4970k so i need that socket 1150

im looking trogh my choise of hardware dealer i can finde two motherboards in my price range and in colorscreem

the first one is Msi z97 Gaming 5  the other one is Msi z97a Gaming 7

Frist of all whats the difference between z97 and z97a? i see that msi have listed a lot of them like h97 and z87 so what does this meen?

and secound part do i need the gaming 7? i can see there is 3 differences between them

first of all the gaming 5 does not support usb 3.1 but how hard is it to get an adapter like when usb 3.0 was first introduced?

secound thing is the sound the audiports are 6 at the gaming 5 but at the gaming 7 its typed like this " 6+ Optical SPDIF" i need the 6 inputs but do i need the optical SPDIF?

And for the finnal thing is that gaming 5 have VGA max share memory (mb) at 1760 and the gaming 7 have only 512 i imagen that this is by the vga output from motherboard to a monitor whitch i will never use! (correct me if im wrong)

Thanks for the help :)

The difference is the Z97a has USB 3.1.

I don't know what this means? Do you mean rear IO or internal connector as I only remember a USB 3 to 2 adapter being for internal connectors.

secound thing is the sound the audiports are 6 at the gaming 5 but at the gaming 7 its typed like this " 6+ Optical SPDIF" i need the 6 inputs but do i need the optical SPDIF?

If you don't need optical, don't worry about it as that's the only difference (same codec, etc...)

And for the finnal thing is that gaming 5 have VGA max share memory (mb) at 1760 and the gaming 7 have only 512 i imagen that this is by the vga output from motherboard to a monitor whitch i will never use! (correct me if im wrong)

Don't worry about this is you are going to use a discrete graphics card, only really impacts onboard.

Thanks for the help :)

Along with all the bold bits, the Gaming 7 has 2 more SATA 6gb/s ports, there are 2 more USB 3.0 connectors on the rear IO, and open case features like Power, Reset and OC genie buttons and dual BIOS switch.

Gaming 5 is the smart choice IMHO.

$20–40, plus the sacrifice of one PCIe x4 slot. That price seems to be approximately the difference between the Gaming 5 and Gaming 7.

Though, a better question is how likely you are to end up with a device that takes advantage of USB 3.1 bandwidth. If you know you'll definitely use it, then maybe it's worth it.

For my part, I bought into USB 3.0 back in 2010, and I still don't even own any USB 3.0-capable devices. I had kinda hoped cell phones and tablets would have updated their USB interfaces by now but, well, ya know… :P

He gave you an answer. You asked about msi. He told you about the same damn board but just with a different chipset. You complained. Dont be rude to others on here when they try to help you.
