Hey guys,

My computer has always made rattling noises when under high load but more recently it has started to make them all the time.

I can quiet it by pushing one side panel or the other.

But obviously its not a permanent fix, so I completely removed the side panel from the main side and what do you know? 5 minutes later the computer hasnt made any rattling noises at all.

I was wondering if any of you had a more permanent fix?

Here are observations that I have made:

Pusing on the mobo's main power cord reduces rattling,

Pushing on cords in the back of the PC reduces rattling.

Removing main side panel reduces rattling.

Pushing on either side panel towards the front of the case reduces rattling.

Yes I am using a stock CPU cooler, but its quiet when not under load. (At least by my standards)

Ive never heard my PSU making any sounds whatsoever.

Im going to close the case up now, tightning all the screws I see as I go... If it fixes ill let you know!

BTW This is going to be a copy paste thread on Toms Hardware and LinusTechTips forums.

Thanks!

~snip~

It's likely that slight unbalance in the fans are causing the vibrations, or rattling as you describe it. I have had similar issued with my case from time to time. And I just 'fixed' it by torquing the case a bit.

It can be one, or multiple components that is the cause of this. But I'm fairly sure that it's the fans that are the issue here. Mainly because it's one of the few moving parts in a computer.

Ok... thanks. I think it might have been something in the balance of the case or because one of my hard drives uses the cheap mounting system that comes with the case instead of screws. I swapped it out for some screws and carefully replaced the side of the case and it is just as silent as it was when the cover was off. I am interested to see how long it lasts.

-=Sorry for double post=-

I was wondering, what do you mean by torquing the case? How would I go about doing it? My case is the Cooler Master K282.

You bend it slightly. And as for harddrives, mine have also made some noise that was caused by some vibrations.

Torque = Twisting force.

Ok, but in which way did you twist it? Is there some sort of guide I could follow? What sort of risks does it have? What sort of cases does it work on ETC.

It works with basically any case. And there really isn't any real science behind it. I just grabbed different parts with my hand and started twisting it slightly. And there aren't any real risks with doing it, unless you really warp the whole case. But trust me, it's hard to go that far.

You can start by trying to DYI some dampening the mounts for your hard drives. Though, sometimes with the tolerances with some of the cases, then it could be enough with just swapping the location of the hard drive. Up or down a slot.

None of this is really rocket science. Slowly work your way through the case to see what helps, and what does not.

Ok. Thanks so much for your help. I will try this later, but should I remove my components first? Also I'm not very strong and my case is pretty much solid metal with almost no give when in one piece. I think that the loose hard drive was the culprit. Thanks so much again.
