Upgrading my pc

Viperadon

Right im probably going to be a huge pain and i recognise i should have probably read through the forums a bit more before posting but im completely stuck.

Right now ive got a dual monitor set up but im hoping to get a third soon; and thats where my problems start..

I built this pc myself but have since lost all confidence in pc building which is rather unfortunate - Im unsure whether a new GPU would work with my system and since reading that 'be careful high voltage may cause death' label on the side of my PSU im sort of not wanting to mess around with it...

currently i have these specs

Operating System
Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
CPU
AMD FX-6300 42 °C
Vishera 32nm Technology
RAM
8.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 675MHz (9-9-9-24)
Motherboard
MSI 970A-G46 (MS-7693) (CPU 1) 46 °C
Graphics
Acer H236HL (1920x1080@60Hz)
Acer H236HL (1920x1080@60Hz)
LogMeIn Mirror Driver
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660
Hard Drives
466GB Hitachi HDS721050DLE630 ATA Device (SATA) 32 °C
Optical Drives
DTSOFT Virtual CdRom Device
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH24NS95 ATA Device
Audio
Realtek High Definition Audio

My plan is to get a GTX 980 (anything from the 960+ i dont mind)
running 2 monitors off of displayport to hdmi and the other off of a hdmi
and upgrading my ram to either 16 or 32gb - now im unsure whether my psu would handle this and i dont really know where to start with the cables anymore and sata cables for the motherboard- Im hoping you guys can make me a bit more confident with it (btw i think the PSU is 500W)
Also i dont know whether a new CPU would be recommended but right now its not bothering me

Also im in the UK if that helps with anything? so ill probably be getting the parts off of Overclockers.co.uk

darkblade recommendation +1

nvidia 970 and 980 really lost his value 390 overtakes 970 and 390x is wayyy too close to 980 for 980 to be so overprice. nvidia is not gonna bring down the price ofc.

how do i check what PSU i have?

Take a picture of it, if you can't give us a brand name looking at it then it's probably trash and I would replace it immediately.

What's your budget for upgrade?

guys?

First, stop.

You need to take the side panel off your case and read what the model number etc is.

is that sufficient?

After reading your issues fully, You can probably upgrade to a GTX 970 or 980, you have 2x 6+2pin cables that will power your GPU. A 970 or 980 will run 3 monitors from what I understand you're asking. More ram won't impact power draw that much. You won't die from plugging in cables so long as the PSU is switched off first.

Also please quote users on the forum so we know you've replied.

Thanks for the reply and didnt realise about the quoting.

Im open to more suggestions about my build such as CPU - Ram - and even a different GPU if you suggest it

A little problem ive been having though is im unsure whether i have enough sata cables or capacity to add more sata cables for fans?

I havent thought about it before now but would it be better to upgrade to a motherboard later that supports USB - C?
