I'm planning a pfsense build for my home network. I've messed around with it before on some really old hardware (think Pentium II), but I now have both the money and time to build a real router with it. See link below for some picked out hardware.

Ideally I would like the form factor to be commercial router sized or slightly bigger and I am also thinking of using a pico power supply with an external brick to help reduce the size of the case. Any ideas for suitable cases which can support a PCI expansion card would be appreciated. Another requirement is the router and everything downstream of it must be set up for gigabit as my next project is a NAS for photo/video backup. The pfsense box is only meant to be a router with an external switch and accesspoint downstream of it, so a wireless card or 4 port NIC is not necessary.

My current internet connection is Verizon FIOS with a 50mbps upload and download cap. I believe I can run data straight from the Optical Network Terminal to the pfsense machine for this project.

Hah yeah I know of the videos :P. My requirements are a bit different since it's really only meant for a single apartment rather than a small company. Although I'm definitely up for upgrading to server grade hardware once it's up and running. Low initial cost for set-up and testing would be good though. Having newer hardware such as LGA 1150 (for upgrades later down the road) and a form factor that can fit nicely where the current ISP router sits is most important for me at the moment.

Yeah, I know what you mean lol.

I might end up doing something similar for my room and such, that or just get some decent managed switch instead :P
