Static IP

Go to solution Solved by Wombo,

Basically I'm stuck with strict NAT in some games, like GTA V for example, as port forward/DMZ doesn't work, and my ISP says you can only port forward or enable DMZ if you pay for a static IP. Is this common practice among ISPs or my ISP are being jerks?

The issue could be that your provider is using what is called NAT444 or CGN. This essentially makes it nearly impossible for an end customer to open ports as their address is being translated multiple times, once by your router and once by your ISP. If you are on a NAT444/CGN connection it could be causing your issue with port forwards/DMZ as a port forward is a NAT translation. This could be what the person on the phone was informing you of.

It is also possible that your ISP is just preventing you from doing any kind of forwarding. Dick move, but they can do it.

EDIT: I see you have said you are from a non-North American country. It is highly likely you are on a NAT444/CGN network, possibly a poor implementation of one or just an ISP with very few public IP addresses to allocate to customers. This will require the use of statefull NAT444/CGN which will break end-to-end connectivity for almost every end-user/customer. This is most likely why your ISP told you need a static IP to port forward, as anyone with a dynamic address assignment is going through the NAT444/CGN process.

Who's your ISP? You shouldn't need a static IP to port forward. I have Charter and I just use the PortForward program.

Huh? You don't need a static ip to port forward.....

Yeah having a static IP is not a requirement for Port Forwarding in your router (or DMZ). See if your router is listed here - http://portforward.com/

Well it's kinda odd, but nothing happens when I forward ports or enable DMZ. I'm not the only one with this issue, I've seen the same complains on a local forum here in my country. It's a third world country, so as you may imagine there's all kinds of BS. Is it even possible for ISP to somehow block your ports? I have vDSL with Huawei HG 630 gateway, and it's not even listed on portforward.com. Perhaps it's just the shitty gateway they give you, idk. Anyway, that's what they told me, that I need a static IP.

Thanks everyone for your input.
