Thermal Throttling?

Hi, I need some help!

 

Recently (since about a week ago) I've been noticing stutters in one game, Battlefield 4.

Battlefield 4 is my most intensive game, keeping my GPU pinned at over 80% usage most of the time on Ultra preset.

 

I've been noticing lots of frame drops recently, after my GPU reaches 80 degrees C. Then, (according to GPUZ/Afterburner to be sure,) it drops to 500Mhz and in a few seconds bounces back up. The GPU takes about 15 minutes to reach that temperature, but after it gets there it does that core clock drop really often.

 

I am no genius.. But I think this is thermal throttling. There are no crashes, the GPU doesn't cause problems, it only slows down on that game and only recently (even in Battlefront during the Beta it didn't slow down.) The cooler is missing one fan, with a 80mm fan glued to it (redneck, right?)

Is your card or CPU overclocked?

I thought it was the OC on the GPU, I reverted it back to defaults, still happens. CPU is still overlclocked.

I thought it was the OC on the GPU, I reverted it back to defaults, still happens. CPU is still overlclocked.

IIRC Battlefield 4 really hates OC'd CPUs but it doesn't seem to even be that.

Yeah, I've never had a problem before a week ago. I can try putting CPU at stock and trying, but it only happens once the GPU reaches 81C. That's where I get the thermal throttling question from.

 

 

Is it just in BF4? Try toning down your CPU overclock and run the game, see what happens. I don't think your GPU is thermal throttling.

Maybe try cleaning the card heat sinks and even changing the thermal paste.....

7970 throttles post 85*C - 80*C is still fine for Tahiti

Yep. The card actually reached 86*C a few times, and it did downclock. But, other than that it's all good once I undid my OC on my CPU! Weird.

You should look into replacing the fan that broke or running the fans at higher speeds. You don't want the card working at 85*C constantly :)

I can't find fans for Sapphire coolers, and I can't find extra Sapphire coolers for replacement. I'm looking to spend some money on an Arctic Cooling Accelero Extreme III later this year.. Expensive ($75,) but it will fix my problems.

 

If you have V-Sync enabled, your clock speed will fluctuate.

V-Sync is never enabled.

In the meantime - ramp the fan speeds up - the cooler the chip the better :)

The fan that works goes up to 95% when it's at 85°. Can't really ramp it up higher. :(

The other fan, the one you mounted?

It's an old fan from my old case, runs on MOLEX.
