Simple enough as I've put it, the laptop also has a habit of crashing completely now and again, anywhere from 0 - 5 times a day, screenshot added below from crystaldiskinfo.

Put it this way mate, I'm on it now, it's semi minced, chargers ghetto wired directly into the port and he's switched the HDD's with his dads identical laptop a few times, not sure if he's able to and / or wanting to buy a new HDD or not as Christmas is only 4 months away and the laptop is semi bearable for the mean time. I'm trying to push him towards getting a desktop ( Custom ) over a new laptop.

Whatever happens he needs to back everything the hell up, also if he doesnt back up and he loses everything then please laugh at him, he deserves it. until your 18 i dont think you need a laptop, when you go Uni in Uk or College for americans then you moving around a lot so a laptop is better but before and after that a laptop is barely needed, also mechanical hard drives are more pron to having problems as they have less sectors and everything is smaller. A hard drive changes sector when a fault is detected which happens with them every now and then however i think they are limited to 700(ive taken about 120 in 1.5years but ive been doing HEAVY usage of it maxing it out multiple times) while laptops have a lot less sectors, around 200 or 250 i think. DONT defrag the hard drive anymore as its way to risky, defragging is the hardest thing you can ask a hard drive to do and as it has been cautioned it is basically asking a 65 to 70 year old man to do heavy weight lifting.

Check it with hitachi dive fitness test DOS or seagate seatools TEXT DOS as either will check any brand drive. Their both DOS utilities and will need to be burned to a cd or put on a flash drive formatted like a bootable floppy. Also because their dos unless u have the brand drive of the software its not going to spit out a code so I recommend having some sort of digial camera ready for if the software finds issues or errors, actually id probably do this even if it was the same brand just in case as it may be needed when rmaimg the drive.
