Id say yes it is the best version since its currently getting bug fixes and addon content if that's your thing

I doubt this will apply to you since you dont seem to already be playing it so you wont be missing out but it does have some mod compatability issues, that being said they did make it as mod compatible as they could

Disclaimier though while it will work on modern OSes (which I had issues with concerning the disk copy) its still finicky at times.

Dont have an opinion on the x55, I steered away from it cause ive heard of some QA issues with it, thus why I went with the Warthog. The weight of the x55 was also an issue for me, if a stick is to light its very easy to move it in an way you dont intend...I even manage to tip the warthog stick a bit at times.

These should help you make an informed decision though

Steam edition is the best FSX out there. But If you are a student and have $60 USD lying around I would very highly recommend getting P3D v3 since it is currently under active development and performs much better on modern hardware than FSX or FSX steam edition.

Dovetail games are starting to divert their attention from FSX and turning it toward their own flight simulator that is being released next year.

What kind of simming are you into? Casual prop planes or serious study simming? for casual the default aircraft should be good enough but if you want to learn some stuff that you can use in the real world check out some stuff from A2A for props and PMDG for jets.

Also if you have any other questions, the best place to ask them would be Avsim forums since it is dedicated specifically for flight simulation.

Hope this helps

Ok thats great! well in that case I think your best bet would be to get P3D v3 and look at A2A's aircraft since those are what you'll probably be flying at flight school. And like I said for jets you can't beat PMDG's 737 and 777. Also the Aerosoft A320 is pretty good.
