Continuum box

It may be too early to ask but I would like to know if the Microsoft Continuum box for new Lumia 950/950XL that allows to phone act like a desktop when connected to an external screen is essentialy just a USB+Display input HUB or is there some HW in the box that makes Continuum work or does Continuum run just from the phone it self?

I ask this because it seems that the Continuum box is not included if I buy the Lumia 950 retail and it costs extra $99 which is too much if it is essentialy just a USB+Display input HUB and if it is I would get just that for a lot cheaper from another brand.

It sounds like something you could accomplish with a 4$ OTG cable and a 9$ USB hub with an OTG pass through...
