I don't think it's that scary. You just need to make sure that you do your research and read up on it before you start messing around with it. Sure, any reasonably "normal" person should be a little nervous their first time (giggity!), but if you're so unsure of what you are doing that you're super scared, then that probably means that you don't know enough yet to be diving into OCing.

 

If I was OC'ing a crap GPU then maybe I wouldn't be so worried, but I'm going to be OC'ing a GTX 980ti. Rather not destroy 700 bucks. lol, I might just go ahead and buy a cheap card and OC to get a hang of it.

That sounds like a reasonable plan to me.
