Hi guys!

I built a rig in May, with the intention of future proofing/having fun, I play some TF2 competitively and a very few AAA titles so the actual components didn't matter much. 

 

My build consists of the following:

 

CPU: i7 4790k - light OC to 4.3ghz

Cooler: Corsair H100i

Mobo: Asus Maximus VII Gene microATX 

RAM: 16GB 1600mhz (4x4GB)
GPU: Asus GTX970 DirectCUII

SSD: Samsung 850 EVO - 250GB

HDD: WD Black 3TB 7200rpm

PSU: Corsair 860i 860W

Case: Corsair Air240

 

The last couple of months I've started doing a fair amount of video editing and rendering, primarily in After Effects, Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas and using VirtualDub to stitch together large amounts of images and wav files.  While I don't think the performance I'm getting is BAD, I am looking to spend some money where appropriate to try and gain a discernible performance increase. 

 

I currently have the SSD partitioned into Windows // Speed-dependent programs.  So I have AE/PP installed on this second partition, with the disk caches using this partition. 

 

My initial assessment is that I definitely need to look at 32GB - 64GB of ram, as I'm generally using up to 14-15GB with these programs open, so I'm sure they would like to use more.  Secondly, the video files I usually work on are located on the hard drive, and then I cache into the SSD.  Would it be beneficial to install a second, larger SSD (potentially 2 in RAID 0?), to have the AE/PP cache to and move video files I'm working on to this SSD? 

 

I'm looking for any ideas/recommendations to speed up editing/rendering without spending months of wages, but anywhere in the $1000-$1500AUD is feasible at this stage.

 

Obviously, if this becomes something I'm doing more and more often, I would look at moving to the enthusiast grade platform, potentially when skylake-based enthusiast grade CPU/Chipset is released. This would be a significant cost, so if anyone has any idea whether this would be worth it in terms of increasing the speed and "ease" of working with larger video files /rendering etc. that would be greatly appreciated !

You're on the right track, editing workstations depends primarily on CPU and RAM performance, 32 GB RAM would be good enough, the more the better as always. I'm assuming you're satisfied with your CPU so I won't mention that. As for the SSD's in RAID 0, thats a good idea but just keep in mind that software RAID is a bitch and a half to set up and maintain... plus if one of the SSD's fails in RAID 0 you can consider everything destroyed on both SSD's. 

 

All in all, I say scratch the RAID 0 and focus on a beefy CPU and RAM, that's what makes a beastly editing machine.

Youre rocking a similar build to what I have. 

 

Did you have height issues with your GPU in that case?

 

I use mine for 3D CAD modelling/rendering and works wonders!

 

You might just wanna wait, but either way youll have to upgrade to X99 or wait for the newer chipset to comeout.

I don't do video editing but I certainly do a lot of work on game development which gets very taxing in many of my tools. I would lose my mind if I didn't have my 5820k as well as 32GB of ram. I can certainly recommend an X99 platform it will work wonders for what you're doing.

I think if i keep wanting more the x99-esque route is probably something i'll strongly consider. I just picked up 32GB of ram so hopefully that makes the applications run a little smoother. 

 

I'm assuming getting a quadro would be IN PLACE of getting a better CPU/platform, because you would render on the quadro, not the cpu??? anyone can confirm?

This is a double edged sword. If you get a better gpu you can lower you render times but you may not be able to keep the gpu fed with data if your cpu cant keep up. I would also skip the quadro unless you need increased validation or a 10bit color output.
