Portfolios aren't exacly system demanding and unless you are getting like a hundred thousand plus hits a month; you won't need dedicated hardware.

You'd be fine with shared hosting or a small VPS.

www.lowendbox.com - Lots of good sub $15 a year VPS plans.

ok then, the only hosting sites i have found wanted around $12/month so it made more sense to me to just run dedicated, but i might be adding a few more demanding sites in the future like a wordpress commerce site but ill look into that

i already have the domain name so i wouldnt be able to use x10 since its locked to one of their subdomains

i feel like in the long run it would be easier to run my own dedicated, since the best looking service is running at almost $85/ year and for the price of less than one weeks work i could have something a magnitude of power stronger

you just start it with their domain and then you select add site and put in your domain

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

Again, VPS hosting would cost less than $20 a year.

However if you do want to do locally managed and you have the internet horsepower to back it up, I'd recommend this budget build:

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H81M-S1 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($46.89 @ OutletPC)
Memory: Team Elite Plus 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($34.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: SeaSonic 300W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply  ($30.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: $264.64

You'd probably be fine with 4GB, but it'd be nice to have extra. Any more money spent in SSD wouldn't make any noticeable difference on the client side, unless you want to run RAID. The 300W is a good SeaSonic model, so you'd be fine.

If you choose to host it locally you also risk power loss and data loss from non-ECC RAM.

X10 is free, but it comes with a cost, quality. Use a webhost like nfoservers.com. The are known for their gameservers, but you can also use their webhosting plan. It's only around 3 bucks for everything you will ever want. You can attach unlimited domains with almost everything else unlimited. They even have autoinstallers for wordpress/phpbb.

My native language is C++

Take a look at DigitalOcean, they go as low as $5 and can run a variety of OSs, I currently have a LAMP stack on ubuntu server.

You just SSH and SFTP in to the server.

Building a dedicated server for a few portfolios is massive overkill and then building it with consumer parts and running it from home is just asking for trouble down the line.

Seriously shared hosting or at most a small server from DigitalOcean ($5/mo) or AWS will be perfectly fine
