VHS to dvd

I know this is a long shot, but I need help with converting vhs tapes to dvd. Basically, this is for my moms friends who has a bunch of vhs tapes that she wants on dvd. She had bought a vhs to dvd bundle thing and asked me if I could do it for her as she is not very good with computers. I said yes thinking that it would be easy. The program it came with doesnt give me any picture after I follow the instructions, so I started to search for other programs to use. I found a couple but had the same problem. I then dug out my old Dazzle and hooked it up. but windows cant install the drivers for whatever reason. My gran has a this DVD-VHS combo, which you can choose to record from an input onto a DVD or a VHS tape. So she bought a cheap VHS player at a used store and hooked it up through the input and recorded all of her VHS tapes. She bought it when DVDs were just getting popular and that thing was an expensive BEAST at the time.... I don't know where you can buy something like that anymore though...
