Thermal Paste Problem

Go to solution Solved by Amazingasian,

Yes.  Everytime you take off  your cooler, you should reapply thermal paste.

I finished building a computer about 30 minutes ago, loaded up windows. I looked at the temps and there sitting around 55 at idle, I know this should not be acceptable for idle, I also checked the cpu cooler for gaps. One thing that i did during the build that I probably shouldn't have done was that I took the cpu cooler off and put it back on once it had already run and I'm wondering if that's what is making such the higher temperatures. I'm thinking about getting some thermal paste and redoing it but I just would like your opinion before I rip it out. I'm using a Intel 4690k, stock cooler, and Silverstone RVZ01 case.

Just wondering would the air in the thermal paste cause such a discrepancy of heat?

There needs to be direct contact between the cooler plate and the heat spreader on the CPU, which is why you need to have thermal compound between the cooler plate and heat spreader.. Any hindrance of that will cause heat issues.
