bootmgr issues

Go to solution Solved by Atmos,

Is it on the same storage drive? If so that sucks balls.

Maybe try to re-install windows on a partition (leave the 80gb used and then re-install on the other part)?

EDIT: Create 50/50 partition split?

Do you have a system restore lying around on external HDDs or USBs?

If it's just the data you need, then you should be able to make a bootable linux usb, and recovery your data from that. Linux supports NTFS

os has killed itself now completely. ive thrown one of my scratch drives in and am using robust copy to move data off in cmd. it will take me probably staying up for the next 8 hours to move everything, but at least this way ill get a fresh instal of w7 lol...

fuck my cities shitty old 50`s power grid.

alrighty fellas.

im up shit creek without a paddle, literally. ive been trouble shooting windows for almost 15 hours straight now... so lets run through this as descriptively as i can. if i cant get an answer here then i can swing over to sevenforums or something, but wanted to try my luck here with you fine gentlemen.

it all started when my power went out during a routine upgrade for windows. after the power came back on my computer looped to a black screen saying that winload was missing. i created a repair usb and set to work diagnosing problems. first off, the recovery usb, the freaking recovery usb would bsod on startup. a run through bios revealed that somehow my io voltage was far fsr too low, so i fixed that and now it boots just fine into recovery. now here is where things stop making sense. my windows install shows up in installed os's, but repairing it returns a failure, because bootmgr is missing. so i go into cmd and if i set my main partition as active then running startup repair returns that bootmgr is missing. if i set my boot partiton as active the startup repair returns that no os is installed... with either set as active bootrec returns that no os is installed on /scanos

im at a complete loss. i must have rebuilt the bcd a dozen times, run fixboot/fixmbr more than 20 times on both partitions, and tried startup repair about 10 times. after the first repair and rebuilding of bcd the os stopped appearing on startup repairs "select an os" box. even though i can access it through bios, or through cmd.

There's a reason it says Don't turn off you PC while it's updating.

You poor computer has no idea what to do. Re-install windows sounds like best option.

i simply cannot reinstall windows. i have almost 80gbs of renders and graphics work that hasnt been backed up, i backup my work over the weekends due to the sheer amount of work i do during the week. if at all possible i would rather not completely clean reinstall windows. a nondestructive inatall would be completely fine, but i cant use the upgrade feature to do it due to not being able to falsify my current windows version to appear older, Llowing me to upgrade...

For general backup due to a new installation of an OS I am using CloneZilla. All you have to do is to create a Linux Live USB stick and put CloneZilla on it. It runs in live mode and you have the option to clone the partition(s) or just simple backup the drive(s).

If you use the linux option you won't have to use the cmdline :)

Either way, good luck

If this happens often, that perhaps a UPS, or even just a surge protector is a good idea

already using multiple surge protectors. my house was built back in the late 40`s, and the backbone of the circutry is still about as old, with renevations here and there. wouldnt trust my 4k dollar rig, multiple test benches with thousands of dollars of hardware, and my 6k dollar workstation to this kind of electricity. ive only got a ups on my workstation though... might consider one on my gaming rig as well... oh man thats gonna be expensive... xD

Wow that's a lot...

So how did damage still occur?

the ups is only running on circuit with my workstation, and the surge protectors do nothing to stop complete power loss. and power loss during a windows sustem update is uhh... never good...
