It routes your connection elsewhere, so people in the middle (except for tunnel bear) can't see what you're doing. Your ISP can't see what your doing, and websites don't know where you're from.

Its just a VPN, so eavesdroppers cannot look at what you are transmitting because the connection is encrypted and 3rd party websites see you as a different IP if you will than your true home IP address.  So some people use them if they want to remain "anonymous" on the internet, other use them for piracy, so your connection isn't being shown as your home address.  Companies use them for you to connect to their intranet and work as if you are in the office even if you're from home.

if its the legit tunnelbear vpn from their website you should be fine.  I'm partial on anti-virus software.  It is kind of a necessary evil nowadays.  It does prevent a lot of known malware but it also throws up a lot of false positives.

Basically antivirus software looks at the digital signature of a program and if it matches slightly "known" malware it can throw a warning.  But this is also for the case of custom virus's, if you were to take a regular virus modify it  a bit it would pass through an AV no problem.

So its kind of a judgement call on your part.  A.) did you download it from the real website.  B.) do people trust the software (linus video reviews will mean its okay most likely).

so is it good?

IDK, never used it. They'll probably sell your information to the government if you get into any trouble. You're better off using Tor if you can.

why would they sell it any tor wont?

The Cool N00b makes a good point, any VPN provider will sell you out if the gov. requests information on you.  Now some claim they don't store information about their users and keep everything anonymous... now thats up to you to believe them.

TOR, you aren't paying anybody, there are no true ties back to you.  You're just connected to a pool of users all using the TOR network, so there isn't really anyone for the gov. to go to and say "hey give me all your information about blah"...

To add to that, VPNs are required by law to store info on you in case the gov needs it. Same for Social Networks and Google and ISPs, what have you.

so what should i do? or just not use a vpn?

Tor is a browser, you'd have to proxy to it to use it everywhere.

I don't really see the point of a VPN to be honest.  I mean if you want to set one up for your home network there are open source options to do that, and it would be a cool learning experience.  But to use a 3rd party vpn... like why.  Are you really doing anything that requires it? Probably not.
