Pushing a GTX 970?

MikeytheSpartan1

Hey guys, hoping to get a 1440p 144hz display, do you think an MSI GTX 970 could push those pixels enough to be worth the price or should I just go for 1080p?

Edit: already have the 970, just asking about its limitations, sorry for the confusion

At 1440p, get the R9 390.  At 1080p, get the R9 390.

What games? 970 won't push enough frames in AAA games on Ultra to make 144Hz worth it on 1440p.

Spoiler

Corsair 400C- Intel i7 6700- Gigabyte Gaming 6- GTX 1080 Founders Ed. - Intel 530 120GB + 2xWD 1TB + Adata 610 256GB- 16GB 2400MHz G.Skill- Evga G2 650 PSU- Corsair H110- ASUS PB278Q- Dell u2412m- Logitech G710+ - Logitech g700 - Sennheiser PC350 SE/598se

Is it just me or is Grammar slowly becoming extinct on LTT?

Have you already purchased the 970? If not I'd recommend looking into getting a 390 instead.

I can run games like BF4 fine at 1440p (DSR) if you want to play at high frame rates your going to have to kick the settings back a bit on 1440p.

Probably not ARMA 3, but CSGO will get the advantage, so will league. Advantage being over 60FPS and easily 144fps.

It should be able to do 1440p 60fps with some settings turned down.

i5 2400 | ASUS RTX 4090 TUF OC | Seasonic 1200W Prime Gold | WD Green 120gb | WD Blue 1tb | some ram | a random case

Awesome, thanks for the help guys, also probably a noob question but how distorted/bad does kicking back the resolution to 1080p in-game look? Would this help the refresh/frame rate much?

1080p is fine on something like 24inch monitor. 2560x1440 is much better for screens that 27 inches or larger. But if you mean running 1080 on 1440 monitor - the result is not all that great, its not distorted but I fine it messy with quality/appearance and colours in a game like AC or far cry. And it messes scaling and size on chrome. But you do get the advantage of getting higher fps.

Kick the settings back and the AA back you will be fine with a 970 at 1440p.

But I think the point was whether 144hz and 1440p is worth it. Not just 1440p 60HZ, in which case the 970 is fine presently

Exactly, I'm more concerned about 144hz. I just don't know if its better to go with a 1080p with a better chance of good frame rates or 1440p with less

It is a tough one, of course I don't know what your upgrade cycle is or will be, but I have gone by the "buy a monitor that will last a few upgrades" system, suggesting that the 1440p 144hz, is what I would buy today - knowing that in few years I will replace the 970.
