windows 10 ethernet problems

my friend has been using 10 since it came out with an ethernet cable and today it stopped working.  He is getting an error preventing him from using the internet saying something about his ethernet ip being invalid.  what should he do?

I can help with programming and hardware.

Sounds more like a router/ISP problem than Windows 10 problem if it was working before. Did you install any updates right before the problem occured?

yeah he said he installed windows updates and it happened

Ok, then you are probably right, it is most likely a driver problem. Try uninstalling the driver if it is listed in the programs list in control panel and download and reinstall the networking drivers from his computer/motherboard manufacturer's website.
