880m vs 970m .. help

Go to solution Solved by D2ultima,

Okay, Gotcha.

Now I know I'm going to get flamed a bit here, but. That Sager that you linked, how would it compare to this gigabyte one?

Gigabyte: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834233094&cm_re=970m-_-34-233-094-_-Product

I know the sager one has better cooling... But how does it pair up with eachother?

SINCE, Asus isn't a "reliable" Laptop company. And I'm really on a tight budget, really only have 1250ish at max.

The gigabyte isn't as good a machine, but it's not exactly "bad" either... except for its cooling issues and my general decision that any machine that can't handle the hardware you put in it is trash.

But the Sager model should be under $1250; you'd just need your own OS to install.

Hello all, I'm looking for a laptop in which I can do some gaming on, more on the MMO side. And also some school work etc. I'm really strict on my budget which is 1200. Give or take 50ish bucks.

I was looking around and found two Refurbished Laptops, Both are Asus ROG's.

I've looked at notebookcheck and it says roughly 15% difference in the 880m vs 970m. Now is that worth the 50 bucks? The 880m laptop has a insane amount of RAM, a SSD, and a blue ray drive/burner(Bonus!). While the 970m, has well the 970m and a IPS screen, does not have a ssd, but is 50 bucks more.

Also how are newegg refurbs generally?

The laptops:

880m: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834232162

970m: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834232464&cm_re=970m-_-34-232-464-_-Product

What do you guys think? Opinions?

Go with the SSD/RAM option, If its just MMO's which arent super graphics intensive it wont matter much.

That being said, you should look into Clevo/Metabox/Sager brands for laptops, which are usually cheaper but are very powerful still and highly customizable.

The 970m is about 10-15% better performance, so if you need it, that's the way to go.  However, the SSD is a very nice thing to have so a better balance would be the 880m machine.

DO NOT

EVER

UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES

ON THIS PLANET

BUY A 880M

FOR ANY REASON WHATSOEVER

EVER

Also, don't buy an ASUS, especially refurbished. Consider this P670RE for about the same price as that 970M machine (you'll need your own OS though and no DVD drive, but it's brand new)

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

Ahhh, I haven't really went through the forum much, But aren't the problems with 880 SLI? Not just with the single 880? Also, Why is Asus bad / refurbished?

Didn't think about sager, thank you for that I'll consider that one for sure!

ASUS is known problematic and known for RMA hell. Refurbished ASUS machines are almost asking for trouble. And no, all 880Ms have issues; single ones are somewhat easier to tame, but they're not nearly fine. nVidrosoft claimed they'd fix them then stopped replying, released their 900M line and swept it under the rug.

Okay, Gotcha.

Now I know I'm going to get flamed a bit here, but. That Sager that you linked, how would it compare to this gigabyte one?

I would suggest the P670RE, which is the one that @D2ultima linked you, or get the 15.6" variant, the P650RE. The Gigabyte has looks kinda good but it is thicker whereas the P650RE is as thin as 25mm.
