So - 2 years ago I was still running Windows 7 and had installed Warcraft 3 from back then. I then moved over to Windows 8.1 and it was still fine. I archived it and transfered it to my current PC when I upgraded and it was fine as well. I then re-seatted the GPU and reinstalled drivers and suddenly the game started having random bars flashing on and off - only that game - no other. So I reinstalled several times, both drivers and game, didn't fix it. Then, Windows troubleshooter suggested XP compatibility mode. I tried using 7 as it's less janky and it seems to be working. My question - what are the chances it was stuck with win 7 settings from the get-go but I only noticed the incompatibility of a DX8 game with 8.1 after reinstalling drivers/game?

It's possible that drivers started flipping out about it for no reason. I know Simcity 4 is like that for me, but for the most part, it runs fine on Windows 8.1 (terrain doesn't like to load though and it tends to crash)

Oddly enough - when I set it to Win 7 compatibility mode from the settings it runs fine. I guess it's not a hardware defect at least.

Could be. Well - at least it's working again. It was like a part of me is missing without it :D

Oddly enough - before it wasn't registering GPU usage at all - not it is.

If it ever happens again, try running it in a virtual machine. By the time games are old enough to not work on windows, hardware will have probably advanced enough to run it in a virtual machine.

I am conducting some polls regarding your opinion of large technology companies. I would appreciate your response.

Microsoft Apple Valve Google Facebook Oculus HTC AMD Intel Nvidia

I'm using this data to judge this site's biases so people can post in a more objective way.

It's a game from 2002 that doesn't even have support for Vista. I assume it's Windows 8.1 not liking it since 7 and XP were quite similar whereas 8.1 does things differently.
